Scotland finish World Junior Team campaign with a win

SCOTLAND’S juniors ended their World Team Championships campaign on a high note today with a 3-1 win over Macau at the Gor Amongrogo Stadium in Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Matthew Grimley and Lauren Middleton opened up with a win in mixed doubles before Macau levelled the match when Pang Fong Pui beat Matthew’s twin brother Christopher in a close three-game singles match, 21-19 19-21 21-15.

Rachel Sugden restored the lead, beating Zoh Zhou Lin 22-20 21-15 in girls’ singles before Matthew Grimley and Ciar Pringle won their boys’ singles tie to secure victory and a 23rd place overall finish for Scotland.

Yesterday Scotland had fallen to an agonizing 3-2 defeat to USA. Having lost the opening boys’ singles, the Scots bounced back to lead 2-1 with wins for Lauren Middleton in girls’ singles and Matthew Grimley and Ciar Pringle in boys’ doubles.

But three-game defeats in girls’ and mixed doubles gave USA the win.

Scotland’s attention will now turn to the Individual Championship events which get underway on Monday
