Draws announced for 2019 U11 National Championships

The first national event of the new season is the U11 National Junior Championships, being held on Sunday 6 October at Scotstoun’s National Badminton Academy in Glasgow.

The draws have now been published and can be viewed here.

The event is played initially in groups, followed by a knockout stage. But rather than only the top ranked players being able to progress, all players in all events will go forward to the appropriate knock-out draws, reflecting their finishing position in the group stages.

Only the players who progress to the A-knockout draws will compete for the national titles but those finishing in the lower group positions will still get the opportunity for a bit of glory when they compete in the B knockout stage.

In the boys’ singles, top seed Alfie Martin starts the defence of his title with group games against Kallum Tang, Dylan Jia and Adam Li while second seed Finn McQuade has been drawn against Arnav Saraswat, Aakash Balaji and Kamran Shamoo in group 2.

Ruari Davies and Max McCabe are joint third seeds and have been drawn in groups 3 and 4 respectively.

Martin is also top seed in the boys’ doubles with Davies while the second seeds are McCabe and McQuade. Both pairs will need to finish either first or second in their groups to progress to the A knockout stages and be in with a chance of winning the title.

There are three groups in the girls’ singles with Qing Yang Xiao in group 1 as top seed. Xiao will have to overcome Lucia Swail, Shreya Vargheese and Adeena Mehnaz Mohamed Kasim to progress to the A knockout draw.

Tushara Senthilrajaram is seeded second in group 2 and Ingrid Wang third in group 3 and both players will have to overcome four opponents in their respective groups to keep their hopes of becoming National Champion on track.

In the girls’ doubles Xiao is playing as defending champion having won the title last year with Deepthi Vijayakumar, but she does not start as title favourite this year.

Instead, Xiao and Wang will have to overcome top seeds Senthilrajaram and Hannah Buxel to become 2019 National Champions.

Play will get underway with boys’ and girls’ singles starting at 0930hrs, followed by the doubles from approximately 1330hrs.
