Christopher and Matthew Grimley oust second seeds at Polish International en route to the quarter-final

Christopher and Matthew Grimley scored one of the most impressive wins of their young careers today when they knocked out the men’s doubles second seeds at the Polish International.

The twins, who only turned 19 last month, stunned Denmark’s David Daugaard and Frederik Sogaard, a pair who reached the final of the 2018 Scottish Open and are currently ranked 39 in the world, 21-17 21-17 to reach the second round of the men’s doubles.

And they followed that up with a 21-12 22-20 win over India’s Kona Tarun and Malaysian Lim Khim Wah to reach the quarter-finals, where their progress was halted by eighth seeds Peter Briggs and Gregory Mairs of England.

Their run to the quarter-finals was made even more impressive considering the young Scots had to battle through yesterday’s qualifying event to even make the first round.

They beat China’s Huang Di and Liang Yongwang 21-12 21-13 before securing qualification with a 23-21 21-19 defeat of New Zealand’s Oliver Leydon-Davis and Abhinav Manota to join compatriots Alex Dunn and Adam Hall in the main draw.

Dunn and Hall lost out to Danish fifth seeds Mathias Bay-Smidt and Lasse Molhede in the first round, while in the mixed doubles Hall and Julie MacPherson won their opening match before losing a close encounter with Tom Wolfenden and Jenny Moore 23-21 22-20.

MacPherson and Holly Newall and Eleanor O’Donnell and Ciara Torrance both lost out in round one of the women’s doubles.

Meanwhile Scottish interest came to an end at the Turkish ParaBadminton International.

Alan Oliver and Sweden’s Rickard Nilsson won all three of their SL3-SL4 men’s doubles group games, including a superb 21-17 21-16 win over Chinese third seeds Chen Xiaoyu and Gao Yuyang, to qualify for the knockout stage but defeat to India’s Pramod Bhagat and Manoj Sarkar today ended their campaign.
