Glasgow Championships 2019

Rachel Sugden was the only person to retain a title at the tournament at the weekend – she played very well throughout the whole weekend and defeated no. 2 seed Lauren Middleton in the final of the ladies’ singles.

Rachel, with partner Alice Campbell, just lost out to Caitlin Pringle and Ren-Ne Ong in a very exciting ladies’ doubles final. Caitlin and Ren-Ne had defeated the top seeds, Lauren and Sarah Sidebottom in a close semi-final on Saturday evening.

In the men’s singles event there were many close matches over the weekend but Ciar Pringle came through to take his first senior singles title, having reached the final of the Nationals in Perth earlier this month. His closest match was in the quarter final where his doubles partner Jack Macgregor took him to three sets.

The partnership of Jack and Ciar was too strong for Robert Dunn and Callum Macmillan in the final of the men’s doubles, winning 21-13 21-11.

The mixed doubles on Sunday morning gave us some excellent matches with the final being contested with a Pringle on either side of the net – Jack and Caitlin eventually overcoming Ciar and Ren-Ne in a thrilling 3 set match.

The 23rd   Mary Russell Awards were presented after finals to the young players within our group who have shown the most improvement. This year the awards were presented to Nuria and Malik Clowes who travel from Mull to play in junior leagues and tournaments – well done to both.

G&NS Group would like to thank all competitors, helpers, court officials and spectators who supported the tournament – another great weekend of badminton!
