Good weekend for Scots at U15 Surrey Gold

Scotland’s under 15 players enjoyed a successful weekend at the U15 Surrey Gold tournament in Guildford.

Although unseeded, Vibha Raman won the girls’ singles gold without dropping a game.

After two straightforward wins in group E and a comfortable quarter-final victory over Carly Stevenson, Raman faced second seed Gopika Leenesh in the semi-finals, winning 21-12 21-13 to reach the final.

There, she faced her teammate Katrina Chan who had ousted top seed Joanna Vyvyan in the semi-finals, having previously won through a tough quarter-final against Lila Dundas.

In the final, Raman was too much for Chan, winning 21-13 21-17 to avenge her defeat to Chan in the U15 National Juniors the previous week.

In the girls’ singles gold star event, thirteen-year-old Brooke Stalker upset the formbook, winning all three of her group matches including a superb 21-16 16-21 23-21 win over joint 3/4 seed Lucy Atkins to reach the semi-finals.

Her singles campaign ended there with defeat to top seed Leona Lee but she was back in action in the girls’ doubles with Chan.

The unseeded pair won both their group games to reach the quarter-finals where they ousted Sofia Bao and Lucy Brierley 21-14 27-25.

In the semi-finals another superb win over second seeds Atkins and Katie Reilly put the Scots into the final, but once again Lee was too much, winning 21-11 21-13 with her partner Chloe Dennis.

In the boys’ singles event Anthony McGuire set down an early marker in the group stage when he beat top seed Oliver Harrington 21-18 14-21 21-8 to reach the knock-out stages.

Matthew Waring and Daniel Harris also topped their groups to reach the knock-out stage, where they were beaten by McGuire 21-17 19-21 21-17 in the quarters and 19-21 21-15 21-13 in the semis respectively.

But McGuire had to settle for silver when he was beaten by second seed Asish Chittamuru in the final.

In the mixed doubles, the most notable result for the Scots was a quarter-final place for McGuire and Stalker, with Leona Lee proving once again to be Stalkers nemesis when she and Ethan Hosken won 21-16 21-17 on their way to winning the title.
