Gilmour out but Scots going well in Denmark Para-Badminton Championships

Kirsty Gilmour was knocked out in the opening round of the women’s singles today at the Danisa Denmark Open in Odense but Scotland’s players got off to a good start in the Victor Denmark Para-Badminton Championships, being held at the same venue.

Gilmour was unable to replicate her heroics of two weeks ago against Thailand’s former world champion Ratchanok Intanon who won 21-10 21-17 in 39 minutes to progress to a second round encounter with China’s Cai Yanyan.

She will now turn her attention to the Yonex French Open next week where she plays Sayaka Takahashi of Japan in round 1. The French Open will be Gilmour’s last competitive outing before she focuses her preparation on the Scottish Open from 21-25 November, when she will attempt to defend her women’s singles crown.

Meanwhile, in the Denmark Para-Badminton event Mary Wilson and Rogerio Junior Xavier De Oliveira (Brazil) got off to a good start in the SL3-SU5 mixed doubles, beating Ukraine’s Oleksandr Chyrkov and Ivanna Redka 21-7 23-21.

Colin Leslie and Denmark’s Catherine Rosengren lost out to Jan-Niklas Pott and Helle Sofie Sagoy 26-24 21-11 but they bounced back in style to beat Wilson and De Oliveira 21-15 21-17 in the second group match to leave the group intriguingly poised with one more round of matches to play.

Wilson teamed up with Sagoy in the SL4-SU5 women’s doubles to beat Redka and Arati Patil 21-7 21-8 and Wilson also won her opening SL4-SU5 singles match, beating Patil 21-9 21-7 but in the SU5 men’s doubles Leslie and Guatemala’s Raul Anguiano Araujo lost their first group game to Joshua Donker and Mark Modderman.

In the SS6 events Bobby Laing and Maria Bartusz of Poland beat India’s Gandeep Grewal and Denmark’s Simone Larsen but then lost to English duo Andrew Martin and Rachel Choong.

Laing also lost to Martin in the singles before the pair teamed up to beat Bartusz and Larsen in the doubles.
