Matthew Grimley continued his serene progress at the Bulgarian Junior International today with victory in men’s singles and doubles.
He eased to a 21-10 21-8 win over Englishman Stephen Jong in the singles before returning to court later to score another easy win in the doubles.
This time the scores were reversed, with Matthew and his brother Christopher beating Austrians Jannik Maczejka and Simon Offner 21-8 21-10 to set up a clash with Israel’s May Bar Netzer and Maxim Grinblat tomorrow.
Grimley will play seventh seed Marc Cardona of Spain in the singles.
In the women’s singles Rachel Sugden almost caused the upset of the day, coming within a whisker of toppling top seed Maria Delcheva.
The young Scot won the first game 21-16, but couldn’t hold on to her advantage, losing the second and third games 21-13 24-22 respectively.
Sugden and Alice Campbell will take on Martina Corsini and Chiara Passeri, also of Bulgaria, later this afternoon in the women's doubles.
