Eight of Scotland’s finest young badminton starlets will have the best in the world in their sights in 2018 after being selected to compete in the BWF World Junior Championships.
Four male and four female players will take to the courts of Markham Pan Am Centre, Canada, in November, with six days of team events followed by a week of individual competition.
Among them are twins Christopher and Matthew Grimley, who have already enjoyed plenty of success throughout 2018 both individually and as a pair.
That culminated in two titles for Christopher at the Swedish Junior back in January, winning both the men’s singles and doubles, before the pair also prevailed in Hungary.
Christopher also took the honours in this month’s Hellas Junior International and reached the final of last week’s Cyprus Junior, while December also saw him become just the fourth player to win a treble of boys' singles, doubles and mixed in the last 30 years at the Under 19 Scottish National Junior Badminton Championships.
But they’re not the only Scottish males in action with Joshua Apiliga and Adam Pringle both selected for the competition.
The pair joined forces to reach the Hungarian Junior International final earlier this year, and were part of the bronze-winning Scotland team at last year’s Under 17 European Championships.
Four of Scotland’s next generation of female stars will also make the trip to Canada, including European U17 bronze medallist Rachel Andrew.
Following the team bronze medal, she and Pringle also played their way to the Prague podium in the individual events last year and they’ll head to North America with plenty of confidence behind them.
Under 19 National champion Rachel Sugden, another member of last year’s U17 European Team, also gets the nod along with Sarah Sidebottom and Lauren Middleton.
BADMINTONscotland chief executive Anne Smillie said: “To have eight players representing Scotland at the World Junior Championship is fantastic.
“We’ve seen junior badminton in Scotland go from strength-to-strength recently we’re really excited to see what’s to come over the next few weeks, months and years.
“Congratulations to the eight who have been selected, everyone in Scottish badminton is looking forward to seeing your journey before, during and after the competition in Canada.”
The World Junior Championships is being held from 5-18 November 2018 at the Markham Pan Am Centre, Canada. The Team Event will be played from 5-10 November, followed by the Individual Events from 12-18 November.
