Kirsty Gilmour 6Kirsty Gilmour made a good start to her Bitburger Open challenge today when she defeated Simone Prutsch in her opening women's singles.

Gilmour came through 21-19 21-15 against the Austrian she defeated at the London Grand Prix Gold on the way to the final.

Gilmour trailed 19-17 in the opening game but kept her cool to reel off four points in a row before dictating the second game.

Scotland's No. 3 seed now meets the winner of the first-round clash between Denmark's Line Kjaersfeldt and qualifier Yelyzaveta Zharka of Ukraine.

Kieran Merrilees was out of luck in the men's singles where his reward for a first-round victory over Switzerland’s Anthony Dumartheray was a clash with top seed Marc Zwiebler which the German won 21-16 21-13.

Gilmour and Jillie Cooper are in doubles action tonight when they take on Sarina Kohlfurst and Nathalie Zeisig of Austria.

Robert Blair and Imogen Bankier tackle their mixed doubles events tomorrow.
