Over 1200 pupils from 37 schools across Scotland have already booked their places to visit this year’s Scottish Open Grand Prix at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow during November. Attending pupils will have the opportunity to take part in the Play Badminton Festivals as well as being able to meet international players and spectate during the championships.
Coaching and Development Officer, John Shearer commented: “The level of interest around this year’s event has been fantastic. We have double the number of pupils booked in compared to this time last year and sessions are likely to fill up completely over the next few weeks. The opportunity for pupils to participate in a Commonwealth sport, as well as being able to watch world class badminton in a venue like the Emirates Arena is extremely appealing to schools. For many pupils this will be their first taste of badminton and we hope it will inspire further participation in the sport at school or in local clubs”.
Over the next month BADMINTONscotland’s Development Team will train more than 100 sports coaching students from Glasgow Clyde and City of Glasgow College’s, who will be involved in delivering the Play Badminton Festivals during the Grand Prix event. Details of weekend activities are currently being finalised which will include a coach workshop, junior coaching sessions and Glasgow & North Strathclyde Junior Leagues.
