I travelled with S2 pupil Scott Waddell and Eleanor O’Donnell of S3 to Asturias in northern Spain to train at a regional project set up by Badminton Europe. The camp was held in the High Performance Badminton Centre of Asturias from Monday 3rd – Friday 7thDecember and was organised by the Spanish Federation.
Spain, Italy and Portugal all sent players to the camp and GSOS were lucky enough to gain an invite as we had planned to compete in the International Competition towards the end of the week. The project was aimed at developing players and coaches through training and sharing of information. A total of 27 players attended as Scott and Eleanor trained alongside National teams from the 3 countries. The level was just right for Scott and Eleanor as they trained with some under 15 and under 17 players.
Sessions were delivered mainly in Spanish but with all other countries speaking English we had no problem understanding. All of the National coaches spoke English and were keen to use it on court. Both Scott and Eleanor trained well and integrated with the other players while trying to pick up as much Spanish, Italian and Portuguese as possible.
Overall a great experience both for the players and me. Spending time with other coaches at this level is invaluable. Interestingly the Spanish Coach Arturo Ruiz was coaching at the Olympic Games in London but is also responsible for many of Spain’s top juniors. Also huge thanks to the Portuguese and Italian coaches who made our camp most valuable.
Thanks to BADMINTONscotland for their endorsement with the project and thanks to the organisers in Asturias and Badminton Europe for the opportunity to be involved in this regional project.
