Not many people can say they got to spend their birthday with 48 kids and their parents but on sat 1st December that is what I had the pleasure of doing. The Cockburn centre was once again the venue for the West of Scotland Under 17 Championships.
In the boys singles Jack Stevenson lived up to his number one seeding by reaching the semi final with out dropping a set, however Mark Leith (5/8 seed) made him fight for his final place with a close 3 set game 21-18, 22-24, 21-16. Jack then went on to defeat Euan Watson, another 5/8 seed, in the final 21/8 , 21/19.
Euan had reached the final after defeating another 5/8 seed Robert Clark 22/24, 21/10, 21/12.
The girls’ final went to seed with Julie MacPherson, the top seed, playing Holly Newall who was seeded second in the final. Victory was to go Holly’s way 21/14, 21/18.
In the boys doubles Alistair Gordon and Sean Leith (3/4) upset the top seeds Jack Stevenson and Jacob Reynolds, beating them in a close match 21/18, 22/20. In the final they went on to play the 2nd seeds Mark Leith and Alex Dunn who had earlier defeated Robert Clark and Darren Reid (3/4 seeds) 21/9, 21/14. The final result went the way of the 2nd seeds 21/19, 21/15.
In the girls’ doubles there was another upset with the second seeds Holly Newall and Tammi Gibson loosing to Cara McCulloch and Eleanor O’Donnell in a close 3 set game 17/21, 21/13, 13/21. They however could not do the same in the final and lost out to the top pairing of Julie MacPherson and Sarah Findlay 21/15, 21/10.
In the mixed doubles Alex Dunn and Holly Newall (3/4 seeds) came out on top in the semi final disposing of second seeds Sean Leith and Sarah Allan 21/16, 21/18. They continued that good form in the final beating the top seeds Alistair Gordon and Julie Macpherson in a close 3 set match 17/21, 24/22, 21/18.
In the under 13 event the boys final was contested after several close games en route by top seed Lloyd Holland and 5/8 seed Josh Mackay and was to go Lloyds way 21/15, 21/9
The girls’ final was a match between the top two seeds however upsetting the seeding Rachel Sugden, the second seed, beat top seed Rachel Andrew 21/9, 21/12.
The boys’ doubles was again contested by the two top seeds. Again, the second seeds came out winners in this contest with Joshua Apiliga and Harry Mobey beating top seeds Aiden Delany and Adam Pringle 21/12, 18/21, 21/17 in the final.
The girls’ doubles was a round robin contest with all 5 pairs playing each other. Rachel Andrew and Maria Leith, the top seeds, won the pool to take the title, only dropping one set on the way. The runners up in the pool were Eileen Gordon and Jennifer Lafferty.
The West group would once again like to thank the Badminton Scotland Officials for refereeing the semi finals and finals, the Cockburn centre staff and Kathryn Hannah for keeping everyone well fed and watered throughout the weekend. Also a huge thanks to the players as all of the games were played in a sporting manner and left the Referee almost redundant!
