Scottish Senior Team

This Policy will apply to all BADMINTONscotland senior team selections except for those events that have their own specific selection criteria, for example Commonwealth Games.

The National Head Coach will make the final decision on selections, based on opinion, taking into account the views of the other full-time Performance Coaches (presently Andy Bowman and Robert Blair).  It is likely that an independent person will require to be present for selections.  This panel will be permitted to take into account results achieved from older age group events, both domestic and international.

 

Player Eligibility

All athletes wishing to be considered should note that it is mandatory to enter both the Scottish Open and Scottish National Championships.

Additionally they must participate regularly in Scottish and International ranking events and be eligible to play in accordance with BWF General Competition Regulations which can be downloaded here 

 

Scottish U19 Team

Entry to the Scottish National U19 championships is mandatory, and results in all events will be considered.

Where results at the undernoted tournaments are identical, the National Head Coach will make the final decision on selections, based on opinion, taking into account the views of the other full-time Performance Coaches (presently Diana Koleva, Andy Bowman and Robert Blair).  It is likely that an independent person will require to be present for selections.  This panel will be permitted to take into account results achieved from older age group events, both domestic and international.

Consideration will be given to results and performances from the domestic competitions list below:  any athlete wishing to be considered must compete in three of the four tournaments below.

• U19 Glasgow Junior Championships (22/23 Sept. 2018)
• U19 Yonex East of Scotland Junior Championships (10/11 Nov. 2018)
• U19 Midland Championships (19/20 Jan. 2019)   
• U19 Victor West of Scotland Junior Championships (2/3 March 2019)

 

2019 WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

KAZAN, RUSSIA: 30 SEPTEMBER-13 OCTOBER 2019

PLEASE NOTE:  The World Juniors Championships is not included in the Performance programme tournament list, and players “selected” are offered a space on a self-funded basis.

Provisional Selection date: week commencing Monday 1 April 2019

Team Announcement: on or before Friday 12 April 2019

 

1. Policy Objectives

1.1 Select a team capable of challenging for team and individual medals at U19 Major Championships.

1.2 Select a team that will gain experience to aid in their development for future U19 Scottish teams and Senior Scottish teams.

 

2.  Player Eligibility

2.1 To be considered for selection the player must be eligible to represent BADMINTONscotland under Badminton World Federation (BWF) regulations at the time.

2.2 The player must be born in 2001 or later

 

3.  Selection Criteria

3.1 The results of players across the following events will be considered from the past 12 months.

3.1.1 U19 Scottish Nationals

3.1.2 U19 Core Events:

    U19 Glasgow Junior Championships
    U19 East of Scotland Championships
    U19 Midland Championships
    U19 West of Scotland Championships

3.1.3 U19 International Junior Events

3.1.4 Scottish Senior National and Grade A Events

3.1.5 Senior International Events

 

3.2 PLAYER SELECTION

3.2.1 Players shall be selected to give a balanced team capable of winning medals at the event.

 In the event the team is deemed to be not capable of competing for a medal, selection basis will move onto 3.2.2.

3.2.2 Players shall be selected on the basis of being capable of competing for an individual medal. In the event all spaces are not filled at the end of 3.2.2, selection will move onto 3.2.3.

3.2.3 Additional places shall be filled with the aim of providing the best  balanced team available.  Consideration will be given to younger players’ development and experience if it is thought it may help produce medal opportunities at future U19 Events.

 

4. Deselection

4.1 A player may be deselected if:

4.1.1 Due to illness or injury it is deemed that they are unable to perform to the required standard of play.  Medical advice may be sought.

4.1.2 A player fails to confirm to any specific training or competition plans set by BADMINTONscotland in the run up to the event.

4.1.3 They breach any BWF anti-doping or anti-gambling regulations

4.2 The selection of any replacement players will be done in accordance with this selection policy.

 

Scottish Junior Team Selection Criteria

This Policy will apply to BADMINTONscotland Junior Team selections ie U15 and U17.  Please read the undernoted carefully.

Where results at the undernoted tournaments are identical, selectors will make the final decision on selections, based on opinion; and, in this case, the selectors will be permitted to take into account results achieved from older age group events, both domestic and international.

There is no right of appeal for junior selections.

 

U15 TEAM SELECTIONS:

Junior Selectors will consider results and performances from the Junior domestic competitions listed below:  any athlete wishing to be considered MUST compete in the U15 National Championships (6/7 October 2018), plus three of the four tournaments below:

• U15 Glasgow Junior Championships (22/23 Sept. 2018)
• U15 Yonex East of Scotland Junior Championships (10/11 Nov. 2018) 
• U15 Midland Championships (19/20 Jan. 2019) 
• U15 Victor West of Scotland Junior Championships (2/3 March 2019) 

Please note that the calculation for U15 Team Selections will be based on ranking points gained at the U15 National Championships, plus three of the four tournaments above.  This calculation will be based on 70% singles results; 15% level doubles results; and 15% mixed doubles results.

** 2019 U15 Quadrangular – please note that, following the recent age change, only players born in 2005 (prior to 1 January 2019 the qualifying year of birth was 2004) are eligible for selection.  The 2019 U15 Quadrangular will be held in England (dates to be confirmed).


U17 TEAM SELECTIONS **:

Junior Selectors will consider results and performances from the Junior domestic competitions listed below:  any athlete wishing to be considered must compete in the U17 National Championships (6/7 April 2019), plus three of the four tournaments below:

• U17 Glasgow Junior Championships (8/9 Sept. 2018)
• U17 Yonex East of Scotland Junior Championships (10/11 Nov. 2018) 
• U17 Victor West of Scotland Junior Championships (1/2 Dec. 2018)
• U17 Midlands Championships (19/20 Jan. 2019) 

Please note that the calculation for U17 Team Selections will be based on ranking points gained at the U17 National Championships, plus three of the four tournaments above.  This calculation will be based on 70% singles results; 15% level doubles results; and 15% mixed doubles results.

2019 European U17 Championships – please note that, following the recent Badminton Europe age change, only players born in 2003 or later are eligible for selection.  It is anticipated that these Championships will take place late August/early September 2019 (tbc), in Poland.


   

Exemption Criteria for all team selections

Exemptions to domestic competitions will be considered in exceptional cases e.g. injury or illness. This will be at the discretion of the National Junior Development Coach (for U15 and U17); and the National Head Coach (for Senior and U19 team events);   and must be agreed in advance, with medical evidence provided, if appropriate.

 

Appeals

It is only possible to appeal non-selection for senior events ie not U19, U17, U15 events.

A Senior player has the right of appeal to BADMINTONscotland; and any such appeal must be received in writing within 3 days of the date of a letter indicating non-selection; or within 3 days of the date of a selection letter sent to another player. Such letter of appeal requires to include a cheque for £25 payable to “BADMINTONscotland”. Clause 3.8.3.5 of the Bye-Laws and Rules of the Scottish Badminton Union Ltd states the following:

“There will only be two grounds for appeal:

“(a) that the selection was not made according to due process or in accordance with the agreed    criteria;

“(b) that there was unreasonable bias or conflict of interest in one or more of the selectors.

Any such appeal must be lodged within three days from the date notification is received by the appellant. The appellant will require to lodge a deposit of £25 with any such appeal. If the appeal is successful, the deposit will be refunded. Otherwise, the deposit will be fortfeit”

BADMINTONscotland’s Appeals Panel meet to consider any appeals at a pre-arranged time – this Appeals Panel consists of two BADMINTONscotland representatives, as well as BADMINTONscotland’s Honorary Legal Adviser and an independent representative nominated by sportscotland

The Panel’s decision on the Appeal is formally advised to the appellant as soon as possible following the Appeals Panel meeting. Only in the event of the Appeal being upheld will the £25 payment is reimbursed.
