Hughes reaches final in Toulouse |
|
Commonwealth bronze medallist Susan Hughes, without a title triumph since the Czech International title in October 2005, missed out in the women's singles final at the Volant d'Or Tournament in
Toulouse (
France) on Saturday.
Hughes, the 25-year-old third seed and world No 43 from
Glasgow, had reached the final without dropping a game in her four matches and beat two of the joint fifth seeds in confident fashion in the quarters and semis in the shape of Dutch player Rachel Van Cutsen and
Indonesia's Maria Elfira Christina.
But in the final she found world No 48 Olga Konon of
Belarus too strong for her and went down 21-18 21-12 in 36 minutes. Konon had only come through to the final after surviving a tense quarter-final with
England's fourth seed and world No 45 Jill Pittard, winning a three-game encounter 22-20 in the decider.
Scotland's men's doubles player Andrew Bowman reached the semi-finals with England's Matthew Honey before losing a three-set battle with Andrew Ellis and Richard Eidestedt, who went on to claim their first title triumph. Bowman and Honey took the first game before Ellis and Eidestedt hit back to win 18-21 21-15 21-15.
Bowman and Honey had the satisfaction of knocking out German second seeds Tim Dettmann and Johannes Schoettler in the quarters16-21 21-18 21-19 |
