Tough draw for Ross at Bank of Scotland Champs

Bank of ScotlandStruan Ross (Inverness) must overcome three rivals just to reach the quarter-finals of the Bank of Scotland National Junior Under 11 Championships at the National Badminton Academy at Glasgow's Scotstoun International Sports Arena on Saturday.

The size and strength of the entry for the boys' singles means that today's draw has produced no less than 10 qualifying groups.

Ross, the top seed from Inverness, must meet Connor MacMillan (Mauchline), Glen Lewington ( Edinburgh) and Dean Spittal (Mauchline) in his group. If he tops Group 1 he will then receive a bye to the quarter-final stage of the knockout phase of the championship for Scotland's emerging young stars.

Ross's doubles partner Andrew Thomson (Lanark) is the second seed in the singles and he is in Group 2 along with Jamie Gallagher (Milngavie), Ewan Laing (Haddington) and Stewart Dyce (Mauchline).

In a marathon day of badminton, Ross and Thomson face four other pairs in their Group 1 doubles campaign. If they top the group they will qualify for the knockout semi-finals. Callum MacMillan (Mauchline) and David Moffat (Catrine), the second seeds, are expected to join them in the semi-finals if they top Group 2 of the four groups.

In the girls' events Edinburgh's Julie MacPherson is the player to beat as, like Ross in the boys' events, she is No 1 seed in both the singles and doubles.

She faces Kara White, Joanne Deuchar (both Duns), Eleanor O'Donnell (Beith), and Lucy Wisener (Mauchline) in Group 1 of a singles event attracting six groups. If Julie tops her group she will receive a bye into the semi-finals.

Second seed Tammi Gibson (Mauchline) faces Lauren Dyce (Mauchline), Katie Ross (Duns), Hannah Ross (Lochcarron) and Rachel Scott (Duns) in Group 2 and will also receive a bye into the last four if she can finish top of the group.

In the doubles MacPherson and Abbie Moran (Bathgate) are top seeds and they begin their title bid with group contests against Katie Ross and Kara White (Duns) and Eva Benfield (Rothesay) and Marcella McMillan (Rothesay).

The second seeds in the doubles are Tammi Gibson and Holly Newall (Mauchline), who face Zoe Clark and Cherie Woods (both Rothesay) and Emily Dick (Inverness) and Eleanor O'Donnell (Beith) in the second of four groups. The group winners will make up the four semi-finalists.

This is the final Bank of Scotland National Junior Championships of the season, with the Under 13, Under 17 and Under 23 championships having taken place last month, and the Under 15 and Under 19 championships played last October.

Anne Smillie, Chief Executive of BADMINTONscotland, said: "This brings our Bank of Scotland National Championships to a rousing finish. We have a terrific entry and Saturday offers the chance to see just how well this youngest age group is developing."

Karen Tighe, Bank of Scotland’s Deputy Head of Sponsorship, said “Bank of Scotland is delighted to support this year's U11 National Championships.  Last month’s U13, U17 and U23 Championships attracted a very high standard of players from around the country and the U11 age group will no doubt showcase the next generation of Badminton talent.”
