Inaugural Bank of Scotland Disability Carnival

As part of its calendar of badminton carnivals, BADMINTONscotland are proud to announce that, in association with Bank of Scotland, the first ever Scottish carnival aimed at young disabled badminton players is set to take place on Thursday 15th May at Glasgow’s Scotstoun Leisure Centre.

This inaugural event, one of six carnivals held across the country each year, will bring together school children affected by physical and learning disabilities, who will be able to participate in a range of events held in two separate sessions. It comes hard on the heels of the first ever 4 Nations Disabled Badminton Championships to be contested in Scotland, held in Largs at sportscotland National Centre, Inverclyde, in early April.

The Bank of Scotland Carnivals, part of Bank of Scotland and BADMINTONscotland’s partnership, have been widely received and go a long way to meeting their aim of promoting sport and healthy lifestyles amongst young people in Scotland. With the Commonwealth Games coming to Glasgow in 2014, the partnership also aims to find the best sporting talent in Scotland through a range of fun activities, with a badminton skill central to each.

Russell Hogg, BADMINTONscotland’s Development Manager said “BADMINTONscotland, in association with Scottish Disability Sport, are delighted to be staging the first ever Bank of Scotland Disability Play Badminton Carnival. This event will offer children a range of competitive and fun related badminton activities which are aimed at improving and stimulating children’s interest in the game. We hope that this can become an annual event giving children from all across Scotland the opportunity to participate”.

Clare Mands, the National Development Officer of Scottish Disability Sport said “This is a great opportunity for young people with a disability to develop their badminton skills in a fun environment. A strong partnership has developed between ourselves at Scottish Disability Sport and BADMINTONscotland, which has resulted in many more opportunities for disabled badminton players in Scotland”.

Karen Tighe, Deputy Head of Sponsorship for Bank of Scotland, said:  “We are delighted that young people affected by physical and learning difficulties now have the opportunity to take part in our hugely successful Bank of Scotland Carnivals.  It is fantastic that Bank of Scotland's partnership with BADMINTONscotland continues to offer new and exciting opportunities for young people after so many years working together.”

The event has attracted over 120 pupils from schools in Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, South Lanarkshire, East Dunbartonshire and Glasgow.  With such a positive response for the first year it looks like next year could be an even bigger and better event.
