Higher Skills & Techniques for Schools

Following the high demand for Higher Skills and Techniques Coaching sessions last year, BADMINTONscotland will once again be running the popular courses this autumn.

There will be three full weeks of delivery, to be held early in the 2008/09 academic year, with all sessions to be held at Glasgowís Cockburn Badminton Centre. Two sessions will be held on each day, from 10am - 12pm and from 12.30pm - 2.30pm, on the following weeks.

Week 1: Monday 1st   ñ Friday 5th September 2008
Week 2: Monday 15th ñ Friday 19th September 2008
Week 3: Monday 6th   ñ Friday 10th October 2008

Rackets and shuttles will be provided, so all the pupils need to do is turn up and wear suitable clothing and footwear for their session, and bring plenty of water.

It is expected that places on these courses will be filled very quickly, so book early to avoid disappointment. Due to the extremely high demand for the courses, they are only available to affiliated schools - affiliation forms will be sent out with a confirmation letter on receipt of your application.

The total charge is £5.00 per pupil and there will be no charge for teachers to attend. Teachers are welcome to join in the session if numbers allow.

In addition, this year BADMINTONscotland have produced a Higher Skills & Techniques DVD, which offers schools an invaluable additional learning resource containing footage of model performers in action demonstrating the skills & techniques used in the modern game. The DVD is available at a discounted price to schools attending the coaching sessions - simply tick the box on the application Higher Skills & Techniques Application form and add £8 to the total fee for the session.

To apply for the course, click here to download an application form and return it to Fiona Lilley, BADMINTONscotlandís Youth Development Officer, with the appropriate fee.

Dundee Primary School Championships

Around 30 children from Dundee and Angus Primary Schools converged on Dundee International Sports Centre on Monday 19th May for the first championships to be held for several years. Although the number of entries was a little disappointing, the players were kept busy all day with plenty of singles, doubles and fun games.

The serious business of competition took precedence and the boys were split into 4 groups, with the top two moving into the quarter finals. After some excellent games, Ryan Middleton (Seaview Primary, Monifieth) emerged as the winner with a straight games victory over Fraser Buchan of Dundee High School.

The girls singles attracted only 5 players, playing in a group. The Young twins (Linzi and Nicola) from Downfield Primary won all their games and the title was to be decided in the final group game. True to form, an excellent match was drawn one game all and the organisers were left with the task of calculating points difference. In the end, Nicola was victorious by 11 points.

The boys doubles saw more excellent badminton, even from players taking part in their first tournament. Ryan Middleton again proved the dominant player in the field, teaming up with Scott Lloyd to again beat Fraser Buchan, who was partnered by Ciaran Grewar, in the final.

In the girls doubles, Linzi and Nicola joined forces to defeat Alyx Middleton and Heather Ingram from Seaview Primary.

Although there was a small entry, it was heartening to see such enthusiasm from the players and it is hoped that next year we can encourage a bigger entry. Thanks are due to everyone who helped on the day, especially Maria Hadden who organised draws, trophies and kept all the players and volunteers in line.
