Junior Selection Criteria

Junior Team Selection Criteria

  • When selecting Junior teams to represent Scotland, the Junior selectors are asked to pick the strongest team, taking into account the format of the event and cognisance of recent results & performances: domestic & international.

European Junior Championships Selection Criteria

The selectors will pick the strongest team possible, taking into account the following:

  • Results and performances against the top ranked U19 European players
  • Results and performances against the top ranked U19 British players
  • Results and performances against other internationally recognised U19 players
  • Results and performances against recognised senior players
  • Results and performances against members of the GB Olympic Programme
  • Results and performances at National Championships

National Satellite Squad Selection Criteria

The selection criteria to the national Satellite squads, as listed below, have been revised. Information relating to guidance notes on the multi-stage fitness test, the attendance commitment expected of each player, the tournament budget and how special invites to spar in other squad set ups will occur are also included.

The below selection criteria is in place to prepare all player/s to compete at International level both domestically and in European Competitions.

The U15 Squad will run on Sundays from 10-1pm (12-1 weekly games session) and U19 squad will run on Sundays from 1-4 (1-2 weekly games session).

The National Squad expects a 50% attendance rate for each player on the programme.  If an athlete is unable to commit to this percentage then it is strongly recommended that the player on this occasion declines their invitation to the National Squad therefore allowing another player the opportunity to be invited.

In addition to the weekly National Squad, on special occasions the Head Coach of the U19 Programme will give special invites to players in the U19 squad to allow them the opportunity to spar with players in the U23 squad, therefore aiding their development and transition to Senior Play.  On special occasions a player may also receive a request to attend a Junior High Performance Games session but this will be on the instruction and invite of the Head Coach U19  or Junior High Performance Coach only.

A Tournament Budget is in place for all age groups in the National Squad and the Tournaments will be decided by the Head Coach of the Programme.  Only those holding a permanent place in the squad and invited as part of the trip will be funded for tournaments.

A player has an opportunity to be considered for selection to represent their Country whether they are part of the National Squad or not.

Selection Criteria ñ automatic selection

The following will be automatically selected for the National Weekly Squad, with the exception of members of the Junior High Performance Squad:

All age groups i.e., U19, U17, U15, and U13 Bank of Scotland National Junior Championships:

  • Finalist and semi-finalists of boysí singles (6month invite)
  • Finalist in ladies singles (6 month invite)
  • Winners of boysí doubles (6 month invite)
  • Winners of girlsí doubles (6 month invite)
  • Winners of mixed doubles (6 month invite)

A 3-month invitation will be issued to an athlete de-selected from the Junior High Performance Squad, thereafter athletes will require to meet the National Squad criteria for re-selection.

Selection Criteria ñ Other Selections (3 months or 6 months invite)

  • Finalists in doubles events in all age groups may also be invited at the discretion of the Head Coach.
  • Consideration may be given to all semi final placings
  • Other selections may be based on attitude and performance by recommendation from the coaches involved in the National Satellite Cell.

Squad Places Available (Either on a 3 month or 6month basis)

  • Squad U15: 22 permanent invites: 2 rotational guest spots (special invites by nomination from the National Satellite Cell Coaches on a 3-6 weekly basis).
  • Squad U19: 22 permanent invites: 2 rotational guest spots (special invites by nomination from the National Satellite Cell Coaches on a 3-6-weekly basis).

Guest Position ñ Criteria (3 to 6 Week invites)

The Guest position place is used in below situations:

-         Visiting player from Home Countries or Foreign Country

-         Home Countries or Foreign Player resident in Scotland

-         JHP player whose partner is in the National Squad (Games Sessions)

-         Permanent National Squad Player invited to move from U15 squad to U19 squad by special invite of the Head
          Coach

-         Scottish Player not selected initially to National Squad based on criteria and at selection date but who has
shown good development progress in Scottish and English Tournaments

-         Scottish Player who cannot commit to 50% of the Sunday National Satellite Squads as the player has
chosen to commit to playing tournaments on Sundays:

-         Has chosen to take an extend holiday abroad for a large duration of time

-         Is currently receiving physio treatment for a long term injury and therefore could not attend sessions or
where a player due to injury cannot undertake the full sections of the National squad sessions at an
intensity to which the programme commands.

(This is not a definitive list and situations should be discussed with the Overall Head Coach in charge of the Programme).

It is important to note that the maximum length of time for a guest position will be 6 weeks and minimum invite of 3 weeks.

It is important to note that guest positions DO NOT RECEIVE any funding for Tournaments.  The Guest position spot/s are in place to give players an opportunity to attend the National Squad Cell and be given an opportunity to learn from the coaching programme being delivered.

Tournaments which will be considered for selection to National squad

U11, U13, U15, U17, U19 National Championships

West of Scotland U13, U15, U17, U19

Midland Junior U13, U15, U19

Multi-Stage Fitness Testing

All permanent players with a 6-month period will require to undertake the multi-stage fitness test.  The test is an individual based test where each player/s sets their own level and within each 6-month block players are expected to increase their individual level (where levels are low) or maintain level (where levels are high).   Players who are injured or sick will require to produce a sickness line from a doctor or physio advising the reasons why any player is unable to sit the test.  Before any re-selections occur all players must sit the test otherwise consideration will be taken to offering a guest position place until the player is able to sit the test.
