Commonwealth Youth Games Selection Criteria

BADMINTON SPECIFIC SELECTION POLICY FOR COMMONWEALTH YOUTH GAMES, 2008

The Commonwealth Games Council Policy presents a number of challenges for badminton which the proposed criteria take into account.

1 The age group (born 1 Jan 1990 or later) does not coincide with the standard junior circuit age group events, most of which are under 19 rather than under 18.

2 There is no Great Britain ranking list for badminton.

3 The majority of events that would be relevant in calculating a ranking for Scottish    players take place between October 2007 and January 2008 which is outwith the proposed qualifying period.

4 The number of events within the proposed qualifying period would not permit an accurate assessment of an athleteís true position in a UK context.

5 It is not possible to set targets of quarter or semi final placings for specific championships because it is unlikely that any U18 athlete will be seeded in the U19 events and so progress is too draw dependent.

 The following is therefore proposed:

A player or pair will be considered to have met the qualification criteria for the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games if their results in:

A)        English Challenger Circuit Championships:

Northumberland (week ending 25th Nov 2007

Sussex (week ending 20th Jan 2008)

Nottingham (week ending 10th Feb 2008

Wycombe (week ending 20th April 2008

Wigan (week ending 4th May 2008)

B)        European Junior Circuit:

Belgian Junior (week ending 13th Jan 2008)

Dutch Junior (week ending 2nd March 2008)

German Junior (week ending 9th March 2008

C)        Outstanding results against senior players and world class juniors may

            also be taken into account.

from 1st October 2007 to 25th July 2008 show that they would appear in the top two of a nominal British under 18 ranking list.

The list will be formed by extrapolating the points awarded to UK under 18 athletes by the organisers of each of the relevant circuits in order to show the position of Scottish athletes in relation to other UK athletes.
