Cooper and Gilmour shine in Stockholm

Jillie CooperJillie Cooper and Kirsty Gilmour made their mark at the Swedish International in Stockholm with three impressive wins on the way to the women's doubles semi-finals.

Edinburgh's Cooper and Bothwell's Gilmour got off to a great start when they defeated Yonex Estonia International runners-up Ilse Vaessen and Samantha Barning 21-10 12-21 22-20 on their second match point.

In the second round they overcame Finland's Mathilda Lyndholm and Jenny Nystrom 23-21 21-13 and then booked their semi-final place with a 22-20 21-11 win over Sweden's Sanne Ekberg and Amanda Hogstrom.

Only American pair Eva Lee and Paula Lynn Obanana stopped them, winning 25-23 21-18 despite the Scottish pair holding two game points in the opener.

There was frustration for Glasgow's Imogen Bankier and England's Chris Adcock as the top seeds fell in the semi-finals to fourth seeds Mads Pieler Kolding and Julie Houmann of Denmark 14-21 21-13 21-17.

Kirsty GilmourBankier and Adcock are No 14 in the world rankings but their Olympic rivals Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork will get a boost from No 22 after the second seeds reached their first final since the Swiss Open last March and lifted the title by beating Kolding and Houmann 21-17 21-17.

In the women's singles Susan Egelstaff failed to build on her 21-12 21-17 first-round win over Poland's Kamila Augustyn when she went down to New Zeeland’s Michelle Chan Ky 22-20 21-17. But she went one round further than her Olympic rival Elizabeth Cann of England.

In the men's singles Glasgow's Kieran Merrilees battled through three tough qualifying contests but then fell to Dutch eighth seed Eric Pang in the first round 21-13 21-12 while in the men's doubles Longniddry's Paul Van Rietvelde and new partner Marcus Ellis lost 21-13 21-12 to Andreas Heinz and Max Schwenger in the opening round.
