Good start for Egelstaff as Cann misses out

Susan EgelstaffScotland's Susan Egelstaff moved smoothly into the second round of the Swedish International in Stockholm this morning - but her quarter-final clash with Olympic rival Elizabeth Cann will not be happening.

Third seed Egelstaff moved into the second round with a 21-12 21-17 win over Poland's Kamila Augustyn, despite trailing 5-1 at the start of the second game. But Cann lost 21-15 21-18 against Sashina Vignes Waran, the French player she defeated 21-13 21-13 in last Saturday's Yonex Estonia International semi-finals.

Egelstaff, who went into Stockholm action at No 32 in the world to Cann's No 50, will now be looking to boost her ranking with a good run in Sweden. In the second round later today she will meet Turkey's Ozge Bayrak or Michelle Chan Ky of New Zealand.

In the men's singles Kieran Merrilees' efforts in coming through three tough qualifying rounds yesterday caught up with him when the Glaswegian went down to Dutch eighth seed Eric Pang 21-13 21-12.

Glasgow's Imogen Bankier goes into mixed doubles action later today after she and England's Chris Adcock, the top seeds and world silver medallists, received a first-round bye along with second seeds and GB rivals Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork, the Commonwealth silver medallists who are ranked No 22 to the Anglo-Scottish pairs' No. 14.
