| Bankier & Adcock could meet rivals again |
|
Scotland's Bankier and England's Adcock lost in three games to Robertson and Wallwork in the first round of last week's Maybank Malaysian Open. It was the first meeting between the two pairs who are ranked No. 14 and No. 23 in the world respectively. Top seeds Adcock and Bankier may have to overcome England rivals Marcus Ellis and Heather Olver or Danish fourth seeds Mads Pieler Kolding and Julie Houmann if they are to reach the final while Robertson and Wallwork will probably have to overcome strong Russian pair and third seeds Alexandr Nikolaenko and Valeri Sorokina. Scotland's Robert Blair and England's Gabby White, the third GB pair in the Olympic race at No. 21 in the world, have not entered the mixed doubles in Stockholm. In the women's singles Olympic rivals Susan Egelstaff and Elizabeth Cann are seeded to meet in the quarter-finals. Eighth seed Cann arrives in Stockholm fresh from finishing runner-up at the Yonex Estonian Open on Sunday where she went down in three games to Scottish International champion Judith Meulendijks in the final. Glasgow third seed Egelstaff begins her bid against Poland's Kamilla Augustyn while Cann meets Sacha Vignes Waran, the French player she beat in the Estonia semi-finals. It is only Egelstaff's second tournament since recovering from a knee problem which sidelined her in November and December but she is still ranked No 32 in the world to Cann's 54. Kirsty Gilmour, who lost in the first round in Estonia, has to tackle the qualifying where she has been drawn against Brazil's eighth qualifying seed Lohaynny Vicente in the first round. If Gilmour wins her opener she will then have to overcome Germany's Kim Buss or Denmark's Lene Clausen to reach the main draw. Gilmour also tackles the women's doubles with Edinburgh's Jillie Cooper but they face a tough start against Estonian runners-up Samantha Barning and Ilse Vaessen of the Netherlands. Yonex Scottish National champion Kieran Merrilees must contest a 64-strong qualifying competition and begins his bid to reach the main draw on Thursday against Sweden's Mikael Westerback. Merrilees needs three wins to reach the first round. In the men's doubles Longniddry's Paul Van Rietvelde will partner England's Marcus Ellis and they start their bid against Denmark's Morten Skroeder Boedskov and Jacob Staael. In Estonia last week Scotland players had a tough time. Gilmour lost in close first-round match in the women's singles, beaten 17-21 22-20 21-14 against China's Fang Hua Lio while Ruaraidh Sim went out in the first round of men's singles qualifying. In the men's doubles Patrick MacHugh and Michael Campbell won a close first-round clash with Estonia's Andres Aru and Ants Mengel 18-21 21-10 24-22 before losing in the second round 21-13 21-19 against German eighth seeds Andreas Heinz and Max Schwenger.
