U15/19 Scottish National Junior Championships

Prestwick’s Josh Neil upset the seeding to win the Under 19 men’s singles at the U15/19 Scottish National Junior Badminton Championships at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility today.

The 16 year old second seed came from behind to beat top seed Matthew Carder 18-21 21-18 21-19 in the final, in the process denying South Queensferry’s Carder the chance of a title treble.

Meanwhile Edinburgh’s Julie MacPherson won all three of her events in the Under 15 Championships, taking a title treble of girls’ singles, doubles and mixed.

There was consolation for Carder when he and Mauchline’s Gregor McVean bt Lewis Gallacher (Kilmarnock) & Ben Torrance (Prestwick)
19-21 21-16 22-20 in the men’s doubles final before Gallacher & Pringle suffered more disappointment in the mixed, going down 22-20 26-24 to Carder and Findlay in the last match of the day.

In the U15s, MacPherson started her treble bid with a 21-17 13-21 21-15 win over Mauchline’s Holly Newall before a more straightforward
21-9 21-10 win for her and Sarah Findlay over Cara McCulloch (Catrine) & Shona Whillans (Longniddry) in the girls’ doubles.

And MacPherson rounded off her treble winning day in the mixed doubles, taking a 21-19 21-17 final win with Stonehaven’s Mark Leith over
Mauchline pair Callum MacMillan and Tammi Gibson.

There were also twJulie MacPhersono title doubles in the Under 15s with Leith and Alex Dunn picking up two trophies each.

In the singles Motherwell’s Dunn came from behind to beat Leith 15-21 21-18 21-13 to win after Leith had disposed of top seed Calum MacMillan in the semis.

Dunn and Leith then teamed up in the doubles, taking the title with a 19-21 21-16 21-15 win over MacMillan and Struan Ross.

The Moira Skene Award, presented to the player deemed to have produced the most meritorious performances during the championships, went to Glasgow’s Calum Stevenson.

Stevenson exceeded expectations to reach the semi-finals of the Under 19 men’s singles and also reached the semi-finals of the men’s doubles, performing superbly in an outstanding match and only losing out in the closest of three game matches to the top seeds and eventual winners.

There was delight in the U19 Ladies for Hannah Laing and Megan Richardon from Haddington as they triumphed over Emma Gallacher from Wishaw and Caitlin Pringle from Giffnock in a close 19-21 21-19 21-18 match.
