Bankier & Adcock celebrate World silver medal

Imogen & Chris with their World Championships silver medalsImogen Bankier and Chris Adcock’s incredible journey came to an end at Wembley Arena on Sunday afternoon when they lost the mixed doubles final at the Yonex BWF World Badminton Championships.

Their 21-15 21-7 defeat by top seeds Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei meant China took all five titles for the third time in total and for the second year running after their success in Paris last year.

But the Anglo-Scottish pair can be proud of their silver medal in a week when they toppled the 15th, eighth, fourth and second seeds on the way to the final.

Reaching the final will guarantee them a significant ranking boost from their No. 18 spot when the new list comes out on Thursday as they close up on No 8s Nathan Robertson and Jenny Wallwork in the year-long Olympic qualifying race.

Glasgow’s Bankier said: “They stepped up their game and are very experienced, winning many titles. On the day they were better than us.

“But to play in Wembley and have this many games is really good for our confidence, especially when we look back and reflect.

“Today the atmosphere was electric. Hopefully all the GB players will up their training and it will be a good Olympic year. We hope to go one better next year. It’s a silver medal gained and a stepping stone to next year.”

Gareth McKenna, Performance Manager for BADMINTONscotland said: “This is a fantastic result for Imogen, highlighting the quality of player that Scotland is producing.

"We are extremely proud of Imogen’s achievement with Chris. This is just reward for all the hard work Imogen has put in over many years and the sacrifices she has made.

"It is also just reward for the significant amount of work and expertise put in by Badminton Scotland Performance team and support staff. This is great result for Scottish Badminton and a shot in the arm for the GB programme."

Nottingham’s Adcock said: “It was amazingly tough. We haven’t performed as we had in the last couple of days but it’s mostly down to them. They are No. 1 for a reason. I don’t think we lost focus. It’s a world final and they had the experience.

“It’s disappointing to end on a game like that. We came in with high hopes but we have a silver medal around our necks.”

The pick of the day’s finals was, without doubt, the men’s singles clash between top seed and world No 1 Lee Chong Wei and second seed Lin Dan.

Imogen BankierThe Malaysian won the opening game 22-20 but Lin Dan hit back to take the second 21-14.

That set up a thrilling decider in which Lin Dan saved two match points before winning it 23-21 on his first match point.

The 82-minute battle between the great rivals was so draining that Chong Wei collapsed backstage with cramp and needed extensive treatment.

The 5,500 Wembley crowd included London Mayor Boris Johnson and Malaysian student Asyraf Haziq, who was a special guest of BADMINTON England.

Asyraf, who was attacked and mugged during the London riots, was introduced to the Mayor and was then photographed with Lin Dan on his special day out at Wembley.

After his fourth world triumph Lin Dan said of the match points he saved: “I was just hoping he made a mistake. The third game was very emotional. I had to fight so hard.”

Looking ahead to London 2012 he added: “If I can represent China in London it will be a great honour for me.”

And of his celebrations he added: “I want to go sightseeing now. I am ordered to go shopping for clothes for my wife and friends while I am here!”

Tay Seu Bock, Chong Wei’s coach, said: “This is the closest game they have ever had, a 50-50 game. It depended on which player dared to take risks. Chong Wei was in too much of a hurry to kill off Lin Dan and he made some mistakes.”

Lee Chong Wei said: “It was an honour to play in such a great match but I am obviously disappointed that I couldn’t quite get over the finish line.

“This has been my best world championships and I am looking forward to coming back to Wembley next year for the Olympic Games.
