Spanish Gold for Oliver

Alan OliverAlan Oliver struck gold in Spain over the weekend as he won the BMSTL1-2 men’s singles at the Spanish Parabadminton International Championships, held in San Pedro del Pinatar from 25-27 March.

The Alloa player beat two home favourites on his way to victory, triumphing over Juan Antonio Ramirez 21-16 21-9 in the semi finals before downing Simon Cruz 21-15 21-18 in the final to take the title.

It gives Oliver the second international title of his career after he won the singles at the 2010 French Disabled International in Toulouse last April.

He narrowly missed out on also taking the BMSTL2-U4 men’s doubles title in Spain, where he partnered Ireland’s Niall McVeigh to silver. Leading in both the first and second games against Sebastian Muller and Heiko Vullers, Oliver and McVeigh couldn’t make their advantage count and German pair took the title with a battling 21-19 21-19 victory.

Despite that loss it has been a good start to the year for Oliver, who also won the singles at the Scottish leg of the 4 Nations Disabled Badminton Championships at Scotstoun in February.

He said “It’s a fantastic feeling winning my second international singles title. I had a lot of challenging matches throughout the tournament and it’s very pleasing that my hard work before the competition paid off. I would like to thank all the coaches who helped me prepare.”
