Gilmour leads Scotland’s European junior challenge

Kirsty GilmourBADMINTONscotland today confirmed their squad for the European Junior Individual Championships in Vantaa, Finland, from April 19-24.

Kirsty Gilmour, who has already played for Scotland at senior level, is the most experienced member of the 12-strong squad and is the reigning Bank of Scotland National Under 23 champion in three events. The Bothwell teenager, who was a semi-finalist in the Yonex Scottish Senior Nationals last month, will concentrate on women’s singles in Finland.

The 17-year-old will be joined by Rebekka Findlay of Erskine while Bank of Scotland National Under 19 champion Matthew Carder and Lewis Gallacher will tackle the men’s singles.

In the level doubles Bank of Scotland National Under 19 champions Hannah Laing and Megan Richardson and two-time champions Craig Morrison and Patrick MacHugh will compete although Morrison will partner Craig Pollock and MacHugh will be paired with Michael Campbell.

A total of 278 players from 35 nations have entered the event which follows straight after the team event, which takes place from April 15-19 with Scotland one of 31 nations competing. Scotland have yet to confirm their team Michael Campbellline-up for the team event.

The seeds for the team event are: 1 Denmark (holders), 2 Russia, 3 Netherland, 4 England, 5 Ukraine, 6 Germany, 7 Turkey. There will be three groups of five teams and four groups of four with group winners progressing to the quarter-finals.
