Connor Mcfarlane (North Berwick) finally celebrated winning his first gold medal in the Standing Men’s Singles where his fitness and patience to rally and work for each point gave him a two set win 21/16 21/13 against top seed and English number one Will Smith. Scottish number 3 Naill Jarvie finished runner up in his pool to Will Smith then played club mate Connor McFarlane in the semi finals where he lost out in 2 straight sets. Connor reached his second final in the men’s doubles with English partner Antony Forster where they won silver after being narrowly beaten in a 3 set thriller by the accomplished English pair Bruno Forbes and Daniel Lee. In the wheelchair category Morag Johnston (Currie) had an outstanding week end in only her second tournament winning three gold medals in ladies singles, doubles and mixed. In the singles Morag was up against English number 1 Paula Robinson who she beat comfortably in two straight sets. She then teamed up with Irish player Laura Lee Jenkins to take her second title in ladies doubles beating English pair Paula Robinson and Elizabeth Riddett 21/5 21/5. In her third final with partner Denny Vettom (England) they won gold for the first time after a superb three set thriller against top seeds Gobi Ranganathan and Laura Lee Jenkins. At the end of play Chief Executive of Wales Eddie O’Neill and BADMINTONscotland President Christine Black were both delighted to present the medals to all the finalists. A new 4 Nations ranking system has been introduced this season so hopefully we can look forward to seeing a number of Scottish players high up the rankings. The next 4 Nations event will be held in Dublin from the 19th – 21st November. |
