Glasgow Sport in partnership with BADMINTONscotland will be running a series of Coach Workshops throughout season 2010-11 covering several key areas for coaches working with junior players at an intermediate level. The workshops are aimed at UKCC Level 1 coaches (who have an interest in progressing towards UKCC Level 2.) All the workshops will take place at the National Badminton Academy, Scotstoun from 7.00 - 9.00pm. Fri 10th September: Grips/Length of Stroke Poor grips and lack of grip changes are two very common faults within our young players. This workshop will focus on grip length and grip changes dependant on position on court and strokes being executed. It will also cover length of swing on overhead strokes with a focus on racket preparation for overheads and forecourt strokes. Fri 22nd October: Planning Progressive Sessions This workshop will enable candidates to plan progressive practices within a session and also plan for a player's short and medium term development over a coaching block. Player evaulation will also be covered Fri 3rd December: Movement Fantastic racket skills are of no use unless the player is able to move quickly and efficiently. Focusing on key movement patterns this workshop will examine why specific footwork patterns are used and will show candidates how to develop footwork in their junior players. Fri 28th January: Fault Correction In order for players to develop to their full potential both physically and technically it is vital for fault correction to take place throughout a session. This workshop will look at when fault correction should take place in a session, how to go through the process of fault correcting and when to discuss an observed fault with a player/group. Fri 11th March: Tactics In order to develop players that are good decision makers it is necessary to develop a player's awareness and to give players the opportunity to practice tactics in an open and unpredictable environment. This workshop will consider both singles and doubles tactics and will show candidates practices that can be used to develop tactics. Being able to read the game is a key element of tactics and will also be considered. If you are interested in attending any of the workshops please download the application form and send to Jill O'Neil at Glasgow Sport no later than 3rd September. If you have any questions relating to the workshops please contact Jill O'Neil, Badminton Development Officer, Glasgow Sport on 0141 287 5971.
