West take Gold at U18 Anglo Scottish

Success for WestA strong West of Scotland team won Gold at the Under 18 Anglo Scottish Badminton Tournament in Ashington, Newcastle, last weekend.

Due to last minute withdrawal of Yorkshire and Northumberland the event was round robin with all the teams playing each other twice, and Ayrshire, Renfrew and Greenock players joined forces to take on teams from Lothian, Lanark and Durham.

The West of Scotland team got off to a good start taking the first round against Durham 8-7, with Lothian beating Lanark 14-1.

In the second round  the West team were too strong for  Lanark,  winning 12-3, while Durham beat Lothian 8-7. And in the final game of the first day, old adversaries Lothian faced West of Scotland. It proved to be a tight battle with the West team coming out victors 8-7 while Durham beat Lanark 10-5.

On Sunday morning a second 12-3 victory against Lanark set the West team up nicely for their final two games against Durham and Lothian, in which this young team managed to keep up their winning streak, winning both matches 8-7. Lothian had lost again 8-7 to Durham and beat Lanark 14-1 the same as the Saturday’s results. Durham beat Lanark 12-3 in the final round.

Gold it was for West of Scotland with Durham taking silver and Lothian Bronze.

Team Manager Robert Gaw and coach Alistair Hall were delighted with the effort and behaviour of their team throughout the weekend. For  several of the players this was their first experience of playing Anglo Scottish events and despite being only 14 & 15 they gave 100% in every game and had great back up and encouragement from the more experienced team players.
