Almost 100 players descended on Glasgow’s Cockburn centre over the last weekend in February to compete in the Glasgow Championships. In the men’s singles the size of entry almost doubled from last year and produced a winner in the form of Stuart Gilliland, who as number two seed, beat the reigning title holder and top seed this year, Gordon Hoggan, thanks to a 21-14, 21-18 scoreline. Stuart’s sister, Jaclyn, kept the Gilliland name on everyone’s lips thanks to a win in the ladies singles competition. The top seed, along with 19 other competitors, took part in the event. She beat last year’s runner up, Lisa McMullen, in the final, winning the match 21-9 21-19. David Forbes and Stewart Kerr could be forgiven for thinking the badminton Gods were not with them this year as for the second year running the pair when home with the runners up slot in the men’s double event, beaten in the final this year 21-13, 21-15 by top seeds and Yonex National Champions Jamie Neill and Keith Turnbull. In the ladies doubles, for the third year in a row, top seeds Lindsay Campbell and Victoria Wan took home the silverware with a 21-19, 21-14 win over the unseeded pairing of Claire Crosbie and Fiona Rae. In a thrilling three game match in the final of the mixed doubles, reigning title holders and this year’s second seeds, Kirsten Geals and Keith Turnbull, were unseated courtesy of a 21-19, 8-21, 21-17 win for top seeds Kaity Hall and David Forbes. Tournament organiser Morag McCulloch said: “We had a very large entry field this year and a great weekend’s badminton.” A complete set of results can be found here by Neil Archibald
