Egelstaff through to second round in Vienna

Susan EgelstaffSecond seed Susan Egelstaff is through to the second round of the women’s singles at the Austrian International being held in Vienna this week.

The reigning Bank of Scotland International and Yonex National singles champion beat Victoria Slobodyanuk 21-18 21-10 and will now face Portuguese player Telma Santos tomorrow.

Linda Sloan came through the women’s singles qualifying event yesterday to reach the main draw, but she lost in her first round match to Alesia Zaitsava of Belarus in a close 21-18 21-18 contest. 

Watson Briggs and Emma Mason are also through in the mixed doubles. The pair defeated Birger Abts and Sonia Olariu 21-7 21-18 in the first round and their win sets them up with a clash against Croatian sixth seeds Zvonomir Durkinjak and Stasa Poznanovic tomorrow. But Paul van Rietvelde and Jillie Cooper were knocked out thanks to a 14-21 21-19 21-14 defeat by fifth seeds Vicki Indra Okvana and Gustiani Sari Megwati.

Glasgow’s Kieran Merrilees faces seventh seed Dymtro Zavadsky later today in the men’s singles, whilst in level doubles Cooper and Mason, Martin Campbell and Angus Gilmour and van Rietvelde and his English partner Ben Stawski are all in action this evening.
