Egelstaff makes it five at Yonex Nationals

Susan EgelstaffSUSAN EGELSTAFF won her fifth singles title at the Yonex Scottish National Championships at Bell’s Sports Centre in Perth today.

The Bank of Scotland International champion and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist repeated last year’s women’s singles win over second seed Linda Sloan 21-13 21-16 in an all-Glasgow final.

But there was a new name on the men’s singles roll of honour when Falkirk’s second seed Calum Menzies defeated top seed Kieran Merrilees 21-16 21-16. Menzies never looked back after a flying start which swept him into a 7-1 lead against the Glasgow 20-year-old.

Egelstaff was chasing a double on finals day but she and Sloan once again had to settle for second best in the Watson briggs and Imogen Bankierwomen’s doubles as Glasgow’s Imogen Bankier retained the title she won last year with Jillie Cooper, when she and Emma Mason, the 2008 winners, took the title 21-16 21-16.

It was a day of celebration for Bankier as she and Watson Briggs also retained the mixed doubles title. In fact, they made it four wins in a row when they beat Longniddry’s Paul Van Rietvelde and Edinburgh’s Jillie Cooper 21-17 21-15.

But Briggs’ hopes of matching her achievement were dashed in the last final of the day when he and Van Rietvelde lost the men’s doubles to second seeds Jamie Neill and Keith Turnbull. A packed crowd at Bell’s Sports Centre witnessed a thrilling 12-21 21-8 21-18 victory for Turnbull and Neill in the only final to go to three games. Briggs had been bidding for a third title in four years after wins with Andy Bowman in 2007 and with Thomas Bethell last year.

But Neill and Turnbull joined men’s singles winner Menzies as new names on the honours’ board. All fivKeith Turnbull and Jamie Neille finals were contested by No.1 and No. 2 seeds.

Also presented was the Derrick Roarty Award, aimed at those unsung heroes who may not have a high profile but, never the less, work tirelessly for the sport and have made an outstanding contribution to badminton. This years award was presented to Yvonne Grant of Inverness.

The Yonex Scottish National Championships took place in Perth thanks to the continued support of Yonex UK, title sponsors and Perth and Kinross Council.
