Badminton Scotland Centenary Year

2011 is a particularly special year for BADMINTONscotland as it marks the Centenary of the formation of the Scottish Badminton Union. In celebration of our 100th birthday we have held a number of events and produced a Centenary Brochure and other items to commemorate this very special occasion. Egelstaff in hurry to Yonex semis

Susan EgelstaffDefending champion Susan Egelstaff (Glasgow) will face a star of the future in Kirsty Gilmour (Bothwell) in the semi-finals of the women’s singles at the Yonex Scottish National Championships at the Bell’s Sports Centre in Perth tomorrow morning (Sun).

The Commonwealth bronze medallist and Bank of Scotland International  champion from Glasgow made the most of a first-round bye to dispose of Rebekka Findlay (Erskine) 21-3 21-7 in just 13 minutes in the quarter-finals.

Bothwell’s Gilmour, the 16-year-old who already this season has won the Lagenfeld Trophy and UK School Games titles and retained her Bank of Scotland Under 19 crown, beat Falkirk’s Frances Heslop 21-8 21-10 in the first round and then knocked out Megan Richardson 21-10 21-13 in 23 minutes.

In the other semi-final Glasgow’s Linda Sloan will face Emma Cook (Mauchline) as she looks for another final crack at Egelstaff, who beat her to lift her fourth title last year. In the quarter-finals Sloan beat Alison Marr (Kilmacolm) 21-4 21-19 and Cook defeated Lindsay Campbell (Edinburgh) 21-7 20-22 21-14.

Top seed Kieran Merrilees (Glasgow), seeking his first senior men’s singles title, beat Bathgate’s Adam Wade 21-12 21-5 in the first round and then put out Prestwick’s Josh Neil in the second round 21-6 21-11. In the quarters he beat Edinburgh’s Commonwealth YoutCalum Menziesh Games bronze medallist Martin Campbell 21-14 21-10.

In the semi-finals he will face East Kilbride’s Craig Goddard, who knocked out Glasgow’s Stephen McPhail 21-10 21-12 in the quarters.

In the other semi-final Calum Menzies (Falkirk) will meet joint fifth seed Gordon Hoggan (Dunfermline). Menzies beat Stuart Gilliland (Bearsden) 21-7 21-10 while Hoggan knocked out Kenny Young (Lanark) 21-13 21-13 in their quarter-finals.

Semi-final action starts at 10.30 am at the Bell’s Sports Centre tomorrow with the finals from 1.30 pm. Tickets are available on the door.
