Double for Knox at bank of Scotland Bonanza

Craig Young, Ellen Howatt & Colin KnoxColin Knox (Prestwick) was a double winner at the 30th Bank of Scotland Badminton Bonanza, held at Bells Sports Centre, Perth, on Sunday 28 June.

In the fifth and final Bonanza of the season Knox emerged victorious from a field of almost 90 players, adding to his previous Bonanza triumphs by taking the competitive men’s singles and doubles titles.

He defeated Craig Young (Falkirk) 30-28 in the final of the singles, then teamed up with Stephen Brennan ( Glasgow) to defeat Michael Evans (Muirend) & Martin Rourke (Clarkston) 30-22 in the final of the doubles, gaining revenge for defeat to the same pair at the last Bonanza, held in February in Edinburgh.

Over the course of the 2008/2009 season Knox had already won the competitive men’s singles and doubles at Inverclyde last August, and the singles at the Cockburn Centre in Glasgow in December.

Nicola McGuigan (Kinross) narrowly missed out on a double triumph of her own. In the singles final she beat Sruti Rudrappa ( Glasgow) 30-14. But she couldn’t follow that with a win in the doubles as she and partner Jennifer Watson (Kirkcaldy) were defeated 30-17 in the final by Morag Baxter (Bishopbriggs) & Victoria Leyton (Scotstoun).

In the men’s singles social category, Scotstoun’s Edward Smith triumphed over James Lee (Broxburn), while Suraj Suvarna (Gorbals) & Faiyaz Shaik ( Glasgow) beat Gavin Dickson & Mark Robertson (both Edinburgh) 30-24 in the final of the men’s doubles social category.

Sruti Rudrappa, Ellen Howatt & Nicola McGuiganTournament Referee Colin Atkinson said “This Bank of Scotland Bonanza was a fitting end to the season. Once again, we received a fantastic entry and I’d like to thank all the players for supporting these events so strongly throughout the season. I congratulate all the winners here today”.

The next Bank of Scotland Badminton Bonanza will be held on Saturday 26 & Sunday 27 September at sportscotland National Centre, Inverclyde, and as usual accommodation and a social event will be on offer on the Saturday night for those wishing to make a weekend of it.
