Scotland's young stars head for India

Pollock, Gilmour, van Rietvelde & CampbellMARTIN CAMPBELL and Angus Gilmour have little time to celebrate their successes at last weekend's Bank of Scotland National Junior Championships in Edinburgh because they leave on Friday morning for the Commonwealth Youth Games and World Junior Championships in India.

The two events are to be played almost back to back in the city of Pune, with the Commonwealth Youth Games from October 12-18 and the 10th World Junior Badminton Championships from October 24-November 2.

The four-strong badminton squad for the Commonwealth event is completed by Longniddry pair Paul Van Rietvelde and Craig Pollock with Diana Koleva the team leader. BADMINTONscotland President Leon Douglas will also attend the two events.

Campbell ( Edinburgh) lifted the Under 19 singles title on Sunday at the Bank of Scotland Junior Nationals when he beat doubles partner Gilmour (Troon) in the final. Then the pair of them teamed up to take the doubles title, beating Van Rietvelde and Pollock in the final.

Campbell was on course for a hat-trick of titles until Van Rietvelde beat him in the mixed final.

The four young men - all members of Scotland's Junior High Performance squad - are among the most exciting prospects in Scotland and BADMINTONscotland Chief Executive Anne Smillie said today: "We are looking forward to seeing if they can translate their domestic achievements into international success, first at the Commonwealth Youth Games and then at the World Junior Championships. It is certainly going to be invaluable experience for them because we know the standard will be high."

Kirsty McGlynn & Gillian SloanFollowing the Commonwealth Youth Games, the quartet will be joined by Gillian Sloan ( Glasgow) and Kirsty McGlynn ( Greenock) for the World Junior event.

Sloan partnered Van Rietvelde to victory in the Under 19 mixed doubles at the weekend and will team up with him again in the world mixed doubles as well as tackling the girls' doubles with McGlynn, who will play singles as well as mixed with Campbell.

At 15 McGlynn is the youngest member of the squad while at 18 Campbell is the oldest.
